Whats on . . .
In aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
Remembrance Sunday on Great Gable plus
Classic Lake District walking with a round of Catbells to Hindscarth
8th / 9th November
The Lake District
Nature: Saturday’s walk takes us on a wonderful round of hills local to Keswick and Derwentwater. This 11 mile hike leads us over Catbells heading south to Maiden Moor and High Spy, before turning back via the high point, Hindscarth at 727m. On Sunday we head from Honister Pass along the most direct route to the summit of Great Gable to take part in the Remembrance Sunday service at 1100. It is an amazing experience, joined on this wild wind-swept hill by a cast of thousands (maybe hundreds) for this moving two minute service.
Start / Finish: Keswick
Accommodation: Keswick – B&B, YHA, or camping
Price per person: £30 – All profits go to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The Royal British Legion provides financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. Currently, nearly 10.5 million people are eligible for their support and they receive thousands of calls for help every year. We strongly feel this day should be marked not as any kind of celebration of war but as an act of remembrance to those who have served on our behalf.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks – Pen y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough
7th / 8th March
The Yorkshire Dales
Nature: This walk is traditionally completed as a challenge event in a single day - but for some that rather detracts from the enjoyment of walking. So the plan for this weekend is to bag two of the three peaks (Ingleborough and Whernside) at a rather more leisurely pace on the Saturday, followed by number three, (Pen-Y-Ghent) on Sunday. Now there's a walk! Usual arrangements Saturday night - good beer, company and food! Should be finished by around 2pm on Sunday.
Base Point: Horton in Ribblesdale
Accommodation: YHA / bunk house / B&B to suit
Price per person: £30 guiding only

Hadrian’s Wall Trek - Northumberland
11th - 13th April 2009
Easter Bank Holiday Weekend
Nature: Hadrian’s Wall Path is the popular National Trail shadowing the historic line of Hadrian’s Wall. Here’s a choice selection spanning around 28 miles of the route which leads us on an historic journey through rolling hills taking in the rugged and beautiful British countryside with a healthy dose of Roman engineering!
Base Point: Greenhead
Accommodation: Camping / YHA / B&B to suit
Price per person: £95 guiding only

The English 3000s
2nd - 4th May 2009 - Bank Holiday Weekend The Lake District - 4 Great mountains inside 3 Great Days
Nature: A weekend of challenging walking that aims to bag England's four 3000ers: Scafell Pike, Scafell, Helvelyn and Skiddaw: three superb days of hill walking taking us through classic Lakeland scenery.
Base point: Keswick
Accommodation: Camping / YHA / B&B to suit
Price per person: £95 guiding only

The Welsh 3000s
23rd - 25th May 2009 - Bank Holiday Weekend
Snowdonia - 14 Great mountains inside 3 Great Days
Nature: A weekend of challenging walking that aims to bag Wales' fourteen 3000ers: from Foel Fras to Mount Snowdon. For some (actually most) people, bagging all of Wales’ highest mountains inside one or two days is near on impossible. Here we offer a civilised alternative – allowing you to take a crack at this challenge over three great hill days. Beware – these remain mountain days and hence a head for heights and mountain fit legs are still a pre-requisite!
Base point: The Ogwen Valley
Accommodation: Camping / YHA / B&B to suit
Price per person: £195 guiding plus dinners

Inspired wild camping adventure!
27th / 28th June 2009 - Sunset . . . on Scafell Pike
Classic Lake District walking
Nature: The aim of this is to introduce you to wild camping. And while you will need to be fit enough to carry a rucksack full of your kit to the top of a big Lake District hill – we also allow plenty of time for it – making this an ideal first adventure for those of you itching to try out your new tent! And what makes this adventure so special is that we will finish the day’s walking on Saturday after we’ve established camp and had our dinner – getting the most of that special light that can only happen first thing in the morning and last thing at night… Best camera and tripod could be called for!
Start / Finish: Stonethwite
Accommodation: camping (tents available for use free of charge)
Price per person: £95 guiding and dinner Saturday night

Pen y Fan
8th / 9th August 2009
South Wales Classic – The Brecon Beacons
Nature: For me this is where it all began – my first mountaineering adventure all those years back aged 14 with the Air Cadets … and I never tire of returning! Everyone loves this hill – the highest in South Wales: for its beauty by walkers and for its challenge by the SAS! However you take it – you can be sure of a great weekend on the hill with these great two days in the Brecons. Ideal for the novice to hill walking too!
Base point: Brecon
Accommodation: camping (tents available for use free of charge)
Price per person: £35 guiding only

The Welsh 3000s Challenge Trek
27th / 28th September
Snowdonia
Nature: 22 miles - A challenge walk: bag all of Wales' fourteen 3000ft peaks inside one weekend! An exceptionally arduous trek requiring good fitness and mental robustness! This challenge starts Friday night with a night spent wild camping on the hill – come rain or shine! Saturday we hope to bag 9 summits starting in the north with Foel Fras and finishing with the Glyders before we bed down for the night on our second night of wild camping. Sunday we’ll take on Y Garn and the mighty Elidir Fawr before descending to the Llanberis Pass – and then taking on the biggest of them all – Mt Snowdon . . . and a traverse of Crib Goch. Are you up to the challenge?
Start / Finish: Nant Peris
Accommodation: wild camping
Price per person: £159 guiding plus dinners

Wales’ Highest – Mt Snowdon
Saturday 26th September
Snowdonia
Nature: 7.5 miles and 1078m of ascent will get you to the top of Wales’ highest mountain via lesser trod route – the Watkin path. Far more interesting than plodding up the usual Pyg Track with the rest of the tourists – this walk offers rugged beauty with challenge!
Start / Finish: Bethania near Beddgelert
Accommodation: camping or B&B to suit
Price per person: £25 guiding only

A Note on Wild Camping
Wild camping - it's natural, it's organic, it's low carbon footprint and everyone's talking about it. It's the new 'in thing' and it's about time that you tried it!
Normally when you go camping you would book into a roadside campsite - pay your money and erect your tent next to your car. When you are wild camping you walk several miles into the middle of nowhere, select your spot and pitch your tent. It's that simple.
True you have to carry your tent, and there won't be a shower block when you get there. But there is a certain excitement and romance about solitude in the wilderness. And it doesn't matter what the weather is like - it can be absolutely storming and howling or a beautiful vista out there, either way you'll be chuckling with excitement - it's really that great. Perched on a hill, away from noisy neighbours and busy roads a whole new feeling of contentment and joy will strike to your very core. Get it right and it's brilliant. (We can provide the tents too).
There is a code to wild camping in England and Wales. Broadly it is as follows:
- The pitch must be out of view of any road
- You must erect your tent last thing and strike camp first thing
- Where you camp should be at least 600m above sea level
- You can not light a fire (for many good reasons)
- You must not leave any litter (including your loo paper!)
- And on that note – all ablutions need to be done in a hole and at least 30m down hill of any water source
