Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
You’re the last person leaving the office and as you stroll along the corridor you see a colleague collapsed and unconscious on the floor. What do you do now?
With widespread ownership of mobile phones, ever faster ambulance response times and a reduction of heavy (machine based) industry this six hour course is all that most people will ever need. The course is designed to give you the skills to manage a casualty for those vital 10 minutes it could take before the paramedics arrive.
EFAW 6-hour programme
On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to …
- Understand the role of the first aider including reference to:
- the importance of preventing cross infection;
- the need for recording incidents and actions;
- use of available equipment;
- Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure);
- Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR;
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking;
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding;
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock;
- Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters).
This qualification has been available to employers to meet their statutory obligations since October 1, 2009.

Outdoor First Aid (OFA)
Your mate’s foot disappears down a small hole up to his ankle while he continues to march forward … Can you manage your casualty, and team and organise a rescue?
These 16 hour (two day) courses are ideal for the outdoor enthusiast and leader alike taking you through the skills essential for rescue and emergency care. Additionally if you need a first aid course to validate your NGB award (eg MIC, MIA, Mountain Leader, SPA, WGL, Mountain Bike Leader, Local Cave and Mine Leader etc) then these HSE approved courses are for you.
OFA 16 hours (2 days) programme
- Safe best practice
- A systematic approach to incident management in the outdoors

- External bleeding, internal bleeding and shock
- Resuscitation procedures including choking

Paediatric First Aid (PFA)
An unconscious adult not breathing has probably suffered a heart attack … but what about a child who is unconscious and not breathing? What you know and do might just save that kid’s life.
This course is for those who might have to identify and manage emergency situations or manage minor everyday occurrences when looking after young children. This qualification meets Ofsted requirements for those working in early years settings and uses the criteria for effective paediatric first aid training found in Appendix 1 of The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Practice Guidance document. The current EYFS statutory framework requires at least one person who has a current paediatric first aid certificate to be on the premises or outings at all times when children are present.
PFA 12 hour (two day) Programme
- Planning for first aid emergencies involving babies and children
- Dealing with emergencies involving babies and children
- Resuscitating babies and children
- Recognising and dealing with shock in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to anaphylactic shock in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to electric shock in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to bleeding in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to burns and scalds in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to choking in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to suspected fractures in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to head, neck and back injuries in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to cases of poisoning in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to foreign bodies in eyes, ears and noses of babies and children
- Responding appropriately to eye injuries in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to bites and stings in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to the effects of extreme heat and cold in babies and children
- Responding appropriately to febrile convulsions in babies and children
- Recognising and responding appropriately to the emergency needs of babies and children with chronic medical conditions, including epilepsy, asthma, sickle cell anaemia and diabetes
- Recognising and responding appropriately to meningitis and other serious sudden illness
Notes
According to EYFS guidance for effective paediatric training:
- Training is designed for workers caring for children in the absence of their parents
- The training leading to a certificate or a renewal certificate is a minimum of 12 hours
- The first aid certificate should be renewed every 3 years
- Resuscitation and other equipment includes baby and junior models, as appropriate
- Training covers appropriate contents of a first aid box for babies and children
- Training should include recording accidents and incidents
